The 7th Annual Vampire’s Day Soiree

It’s the 7th annual Vampire’s Day Soiree hosted by my lovely pal Holly of Holly's Horrorland blog!

This year I'm continuing my tradition of sharing a few snapshots of vampire dolly Drusilla's undead existence.

Drusilla's shenanigans are inspired by the ‘Camp Cute, Creepy and (quite conveniently) Remote’ stories of another lovely pal, Magaly Guerrero.

In her bedchamber at Great Grandpapa's castle, Drusilla is up and ready for the night ahead.

A moonlight stroll in the grounds of Great Grandpapa's estate always gives Drusilla a hearty appetite.

Drusilla stops for a quick snack in town before heading back to her Great Grandpapa's castle.

Thank you so much for stopping by. Please do go and mingle with the other partygoers. You can find them all here.

May Monster Madness 2018

Welcome to my wee shadowy corner of May Monster Madness 2018, hosted by writer Annie Walls.

My "monster" this year was inspired by Poe's naughty raven. My birdie may not entirely capture Edgar's vision of a "fiend", nor necessarily have eyes that "have all the seeming of a demon's that is dreaming"... but I love you anyway, my feathered friend!

Excerpt from 'The Raven' by Edgar Allan Poe

“Be that word our sign of parting, bird or fiend!” I shrieked, upstarting—
“Get thee back into the tempest and the Night’s Plutonian shore!
Leave no black plume as a token of that lie thy soul hath spoken!
Leave my loneliness unbroken!—quit the bust above my door!
Take thy beak from out my heart, and take thy form from off my door!”
           Quoth the Raven, “Nevermore.”

And the Raven, never flitting, still is sitting, still is sitting
On the pallid bust of Pallas just above my chamber door;
And his eyes have all the seeming of a demon’s that is dreaming,
   And the lamp-light o’er him streaming throws his shadow on the floor;
And my soul from out that shadow that lies floating on the floor
           Shall be lifted—nevermore!

Beautiful Freaks Fest 2 is Nigh!

The second annual Beautiful Freaks Fest is nigh, and this year Rommy will be joining Magaly and me in hosting duties.

This year’s theme is:

Scars, Scars, Scars… Such Terrible Beauty!

As Magaly puts it:

“Let’s create art (short tales, dolls, poems, sculptures, songs, paintings, spells, jewelry… anything you can think of) that celebrates the magic of embracing the scars life has marked our skins and minds with and turn all that hurt into an artful armor of terrible beauty.”

The idea is to create an uplifting piece about rising above life’s scars… to find the beauty in something otherwise terrible… to find the positive in a negative.

Magaly’s blog will be our BFF2 HQ, so head on over there to get loads more information and ideas, but feel free to direct any questions you may have to Rommy and me too. I hope our freaky fest tickles your fancy and look forward to seeing you at the party!

Scars, Scars, Scars… Such Terrible Beauty!

Welcome to my shadowy corner of the party for Beautiful Freaks Fest 2, which I am co-hosting with Magaly Guerrero and Rommy Driks. If you are contributing to the festivities, make sure you leave the link to your post/s on the party Linky over at Magaly’s blog, aka BFF2 HQ.  If you just want to observe the fun, the same Linky will give you access to all the party participants.

I was all set to make the Bride of Frankenstein my complete creative focus for BFF2 (she will be making an appearance later), but when Magaly, Rommy, and I were discussing the theme of scars, Magaly (who suffers chronic pain and is battling a serious health issue) said something that struck me:

"When my pain gets really bad, I always think of Frida. That woman was pure warriorness... "

She was, of course, speaking about Mexican artist, Frida Kahlo.  If anyone embodies the spirit of rising above life’s physical, emotional, and psychological scars it is Frida. Despite being the victim of ill-health, a tragic accident, and ceaseless pain, she fought on for her life and art, and since her death in 1954, has become regarded as a national treasure for Mexico, and an icon for the non-conformists and the marginalized everywhere.

So, with this new inspiration, I had to make a wee Frida for Magaly. Hopefully this little talisman from a faraway friend will be a constant reminder of her own “pure warriorness”.

Thank you for visiting! I hope you’ll head off to mingle with the other partygoers now.

Groovy Gothic

In October, 2018, I opened a new shop on Etsy called Groovy Gothic. I have big plans for my little GG, which means I need to devote more time to nurturing the wee devil in 2019. Of course, life only seems to get busier and busier, so in order to focus more on my biz, something’s gotta give…

I began blogging way back in May, 2011. I’ve had such a lot of fun with this blog, and more importantly, I’ve made some really dear pals along the way, but in recent years, the number of posts published here has dwindled to just occasional participation in blog parties. So, I’ve come to the decision that I will no longer be posting any new content here and will just let this blog function as an archive for my old posts from now on. I will keep any links in the sidebar updated though.

I hope to continue to be involved in some social media festivities via my Instagram account (@groovygothic), which is now the HQ for all my online activities. Fortunately, many of my fang-tastic friends are already on Insta, so for me, the shenanigans have simply switched venues.

Wishing everyone a happy, healthy, and prosperous 2019!
